Commission Process

Commission a Custom Hand-Painted Icon

I welcome the opportunity to create a custom, hand-painted icon for your church or home. Each icon is both a work of sacred art and a vessel of prayer — designed to inspire reverence, contemplation, and devotion for generations to come.

Iconography is a highly specialised craft that requires formal training, spiritual discipline, and great care. I approach each commission with deep respect for Orthodox tradition, combining prayerful intention with technical skill and aesthetic sensitivity.

Every custom icon is crafted using traditional materials and methods. I thoughtfully consider the life of the Saint or subject depicted, referencing established iconographic models to ensure theological and artistic integrity.

If you are interested in commissioning a bespoke icon, I would be honoured to discuss your needs and vision.

Materials

All icons are created using the highest quality archival materials, with the understanding that these sacred works are made to be venerated and preserved for generations. Materials for panel icons include:

  • Professional-Grade Wooden Panels
Each panel is hand-prepared with traditional gesso made from scratch, ensuring a strong, smooth foundation.

  • 23-Karat Genuine Gold Leaf
I use only the finest Italian gold leaf to create radiant gilded backgrounds that reflect the sacred light of the icon.

  • Traditional Egg Tempera
My preferred medium, egg tempera has been used by iconographers for centuries. It unites the natural elements—wood (vegetable), egg yolk (animal), and pigments (mineral)—into a harmonious expression of the divine. The result is a depth and luminosity unmatched by other mediums, as light refracts through layers of natural, ground mineral pigments.

  • Conservation-Grade Varnish
A protective varnish is applied to ensure the longevity of each icon. It allows for gentle cleaning and can be professionally restored in the future if needed.
