Saint Mary Tenderness
Saint Mary of Tenderness is a title given to the Virgin Mary in Eastern Christian iconography, particularly in the depiction known as the Eleusa (Greek for “Tenderness”). This icon shows Mary lovingly embracing the Christ Child, their cheeks touching in an expression of deep compassion and maternal love. It emphasizes Mary’s gentle and intimate relationship with her Son, highlighting her role as both Mother of God (Theotokos) and a symbol of divine mercy.
Mary herself was a humble young woman from Nazareth chosen by God to bear Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Through her “yes” to the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, she became the vessel through which God entered human history. She is honored not only for her role as the mother of Jesus but also for her faithful obedience, deep humility, and enduring love.
